Course Description

In this course, Beth McQuiston, MD, RD, and Jamie Marino, MD, MBA, will review the prevalence of traumatic brain injury (TBI), summarize the potential causes of TBI; and discuss the identification, non-nutritional care, and clinical consequences of TBI.

Beth McQuiston is a board-certified Neurologist, Registered Dietitian, and Medical Director for Abbott’s diagnostics business. She is an active participant in the evaluation of several neuroscience-related biomarkers to be used in the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of disease. Current areas of focus include research into biomarkers for use in traumatic brain injury, including concussions. Dr McQuiston has numerous patents as well as peer-reviewed publications on the subject of diagnosing and treating traumatic brain injury.

Dr Jaime Marino is an Associate Director of Medical Affairs at Abbott Core Laboratories. He is a Physician with a Master’s in Business Administration focused on Healthcare Administration and experience in pharmaceutical and diagnostic research. He has a tenure of 9 years at Abbott in Clinical and Medical Affairs. Dr Marino has led clinical studies for regulatory submission in a wide variety of disease states and also companion diagnostics studies for Phase II-IV in the US and also outside of the US. He has led global research studies with companies and academic institutions in the neuro-early research and discovery space. His work has allowed the filing of over 30 patents and included him as the inventor in over 8 patent applications. He has co-authored several TBI biomarker publications. 

Dr Marino has led research studies that supported regulatory submissions to the FDA for Abbott Point of Care and Abbott Core Laboratory and breakthrough designations for TBI-related biomarker claims. He has been invited as a speaker and participant in TBI discussions with companies and academic institutions. Dr Marino has worked with TRACK-TBI, the DOD, and advocacy groups to make headway toward new technologies to help improve the health care of patients who suffer traumatic brain injuries.
