Course Description

In this course, David Askenazi, MD, MSPH, and Janelle Hanick, RDN, LD, will review the epidemiology of neonatal acute kidney injury (AKI); discuss the medical management and kidney support therapy options for NICU patients with AKI and fluid overload; and outline the fluid and nutrition management goals for the infant in the NICU with AKI. Originally presented as a live webinar on 29 June 2023.

David Askenazi MD, MSPH, was born in Mexico City and grew up in El Paso, Texas. He attended the University of Texas at Austin where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He completed pediatric residency training at the Austin Pediatric Education Program, followed by a fellowship in Pediatric Nephrology at Baylor College of Medicine / Texas Children’s Hospital. He completed a Master of Science in Clinical Research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). 

Dr Askenazi joined the faculty in the Department of Pediatrics at UAB as an Assistant Professor in 2005 and was promoted to Full Professor in 2016. He was appointed the inaugural W. Charles Mayer Endowed Chair of Pediatric Nephrology in 2021. He founded and is currently the Medical Director of the Pediatric and Infant Center for Acute Care Nephrology (PICAN) at Children’s of Alabama / UAB. As Medical Director, he oversees the acute renal replacement therapies, plasmapheresis, peritoneal dialysis, and photopheresis programs. 

Dr Askenazi has received numerous research and education grants from industry, FDA, NIH, and nonprofit foundations. He has published original manuscripts on multiple topics, primarily related to understanding and improving outcomes in hospitalized neonates and children with and at-risk for kidney disease. He has written multiple invited reviews and chapters and is regularly invited to speak at national and international meetings. He founded and currently serves as the Board Chair of the Neonatal Kidney Collaborative (NKC) (www.babykidney.org). He founded and is the current Chief Scientific Officer for Zorro-Flow Inc.

Janelle Hanick, RDN, LD

Janelle Hanick, RDN, LD, is a pediatric nephrology dietitian at Children's of Alabama who works with both acute and chronic dialysis patients, as well as renal transplant patients. She has worked as a dietitian for seven years and has worked in a variety of settings including inpatient, outpatient, dialysis, long-term care, and community and corporate wellness. Janelle has spent the last four years working as a dietitian in nephrology. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology with a focus in exercise science and nutritional science from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.
