Course Description

In this course, Carla Prado, PhD, RD, and David Evans, MD, FACS, will review the role of muscle mass in the critical care setting; summarize ideal body composition measurement techniques for ICU patients with and without obesity; and illustrate the benefits of early nutrition intervention on outcomes in this patient population. Originally presented live at the ASPEN 2023 Nutrition Science and Practice Conference on 21 April 2023.

Dr Carla Prado is an Associate Professor at the University of Alberta and a Registered Dietitian. She holds a Campus Alberta Innovates Chair in Nutrition, Food and Health and is the Director of the Human Nutrition Research Unit, a state-of-the-art research and training facility. Dr Prado was recently recognized as one of the most influential young Canadian leaders, receiving Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 Award.

Carla is an expert in body composition assessment. Her research program focuses on the identification and treatment of abnormalities in body composition (especially low muscle mass), with a special interest in cancer. The focus of her current research program is to develop targeted nutrition interventions for the prevention and treatment of low muscle mass in cancer. She shares her expertise as an Associate Editor of Clinical Nutrition and the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle.

Dr Prado received her PhD from the University of Alberta, Canada, and has completed further training at the Cross Cancer Institute (Canada), the National Institutes of Health (USA), and Newcastle University (UK).

David Evans, MD, FACS

David C Evans is a trauma, acute care, and critical care surgeon at OhioHealth Grant Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio, and Medical Director of the System Nutrition Support Team at OhioHealth — a 12-hospital network. David is also an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Surgery at Ohio University. Prior to his current role, he led the nutrition support and trauma programs at The Ohio State University. His interests include nutrition support in surgical and ICU patients and research in surgery and trauma care. He has served as an investigator in multiple clinical trials focused on the areas of nutrition and infection and is the author of more than 100 peer-reviewed publications.

Ainsley M Malone, MS, RDN, LD, CNSC, FAND, FASPEN

Ainsley M. Malone, MS, RDN, LD, CNSC, FAND, FASPEN serves as a Clinical Practice Specialist for the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) where she works to support clinical practice activities for the organization. She retired in 2023 from her 40-year career as a nutrition support dietitian within the Mt. Carmel Health System in Columbus where she assisted in the management of patients requiring enteral and parenteral nutrition.

Ainsley is a global and national leader in malnutrition related activities having served as an author of the 2012 Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics/ASPEN Malnutrition Consensus Characteristics and the 2018 Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) consensus characteristics. She is currently serving as Co-Lead of the GLIM Implementation and Dissemination working group. Over her longstanding career, Ainsley has served in many nutrition leadership capacities including President of ASPEN 2013-14 and on the Board of Directors for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics where she currently serves as Speaker of the House of Delegates.
