Course Description:

Growth is a fundamental indicator of child health, yet healthy growth involves more than increases in body weight alone. Emerging evidence suggests that the quality of growth, including gains in lean body mass, bone mineral content, skeletal development, and functional outcomes, may be as important as overall weight gain when evaluating nutritional recovery and long-term health. As the prevalence of stunting and growth faltering continues to affect children worldwide, healthcare professionals are increasingly challenged to support catch-up growth while promoting favorable body composition and healthy developmental trajectories.  

Contemporary approaches to pediatric growth assessment extend beyond traditional weight and height measurements. Current recommendations emphasize evaluating multiple domains, including linear growth, body composition, head growth, and functional outcomes, to better understand nutritional status and recovery. A growing body of research highlights the importance of supporting lean tissue accretion and bone development while avoiding excess adiposity, which may influence future metabolic health, physical function, and lifelong skeletal outcomes. 

Nutrition plays a central role in achieving high-quality catch-up growth. Adequate energy intake, high-quality protein, essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and other growth-supporting nutrients contribute to muscle development, bone mineralization, and healthy growth patterns. Evidence from pediatric populations at risk of undernutrition suggests that targeted nutrition interventions, combined with dietary counseling, may support linear growth, improve body composition, enhance nutrient adequacy, and contribute to favorable health outcomes, including physical activity, sleep quality, and reduced illness burden.  

Sleep physiology has also emerged as an important factor in pediatric growth and development. Interactions between sleep, growth hormone secretion, the IGF-1 axis, and nutritional status suggest that growth is influenced by a complex network of biological and environmental factors. Sleep duration, sleep quality, dietary patterns, and nutrition-related behaviors may all contribute to growth outcomes during childhood. Understanding the interconnected roles of nutrition, body composition, sleep, and endocrine regulation can help guide evidence-based strategies that support healthy growth, development, and long-term well-being in children. This program was originally presented at the International Conference on Nutrition and Growth on 9 April 2026.

Sanja Kolaček is a Professor of Paediatrics at the Zagreb University Medical School, and the Consultant Paediatric Gastroenterologist, who recently retired from the position of Head of the University Division of Paediatrics at the Children's Hospital Zagreb, Croatia. 

Professor Kolaček is the ESPGHAN Past President, and former ESPGHAN Committee of Nutrition member, and is/was also serving in different ruling and educational bodies of the ECCO, ESPEN, UEG, and in various Croatian medical associations. Currently, she is one of nine members of the Board of Directors of BioMed Alliance – the umbrella association covering 36 medical societies. Her editorial activities include being Associate Editor of the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (JPGN), and membership in the Advisory Board of the Journal of Crohn's and Colitis.

Professor Kolaček has published more than 300 papers in peer-reviewed journals; more than 180 cited in PubMed and wrote numerous chapters in Croatian and international editions. She has been ranked among the top 2% of the world’s most cited scientists (Stanford University).

Her main clinical interests include chronic enteropathies and chronic intestinal failure, clinical nutrition and nutrition of healthy infants, while her present research activities include IBD, Coeliac disease, Probiotics, and Disease-related malnutrition. 

Naama Fisch-Shvalb, MD

Dr Fisch-Shvalb is a pediatric endocrinologist and faculty member at the Institute of Endocrinology and Diabetes, National Center for Childhood Diabetes at Schneider Children’s Medical Center in Isreal. She completed her pediatric residency and fellowship in Pediatric Endocrinology at Schneider Children’s Medical Center and earned her MD from the Gray Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at Tel Aviv University. In addition to her clinical practice, she serves as a lecturer in Pediatrics and an Endocrinology course coordinator at Gray Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv, Isreal.

Dr Fisch-Shvalb’s clinical and research interests focus on the interplay between nutrition and linear growth in children, including the molecular and clinical mechanisms through which nutrition influences growth and development. She has collaborated extensively with the Molecular Endocrinology and Diabetes Laboratory at the Felsenstein Research Center and has contributed to studies examining the effects of whey protein on childhood linear growth. Dr Fisch-Shvalb also has extensive experience in both investigator-initiated and industry sponsored clinical research, including multinational studies, and has been a faculty member of the annual international Nutriton and Growth Conference for the past decade.

Robert Murray, MD, FAAP

Robert Murray, MD, is an academic professor of pediatrics in the College of Medicine at The Ohio State University. He completed his fellowship in Pediatric Gastroenterology at Children’s Hospital, Columbus, Ohio in 1985. Since then, he has spent more than 25 years in the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. 

Prof Murray’s primary areas of focus include biomedical nutrition and pediatric manifestations of malnutrition. He has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles, including most recently “A First Step Toward Eliminating Malnutrition: A Proposal for Universal Screening”, which was published in Pediatric Practice in Nutrition and Dietary Supplements. He has contributed to numerous books and public education projects, as well as to projects involving pediatric wasting, stunting, and obesity. Dr Murray has served in many organizations; including but not limited to a member of the National Dairy Council Nutrition Advisory Committee, a member of the Children’s Hunger Alliance Governing Board, the vice-chair of the board of Action for Healthy Kids, and a collaborator with Abbott Nutrition International on nutrition education for pediatric practitioners.

Prof Murray has received several awards. Most recently, he was a 2016 finalist for the Pathway to Populations Health Award for Columbus CEO Magazine. He was a recipient of the 2015 Child Advocate of the Year Award for Ohio Voices for Children. In 2008, he received a Special Achievement Award for obesity initiatives and Chairperson of the Year Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Within the AAP, Dr Murray is currently their representative to the National Dairy Council Health Advisory Committee. He is the former chair of the AAP Council on School Health and is a past president of the Ohio Chapter of the AAP.
