Course Description

In this course, Richie Kirwan will review the impact of muscle mass on chronic disease risk and quality of life; describe the results of a recent meta-analysis pertaining to the role of protein supplementation with resistance exercise on muscle mass; and explain Mendelian randomization and recent findings of the role of serum vitamin D on muscle mass. Originally presented as a live webinar on 11 May 2022.

Richie Kirwan, PhD Candidate

Richie Kirwan has a BSc in Biological Sciences from University College Cork, Ireland, and an MSc in Nutrition and Metabolism from the University of Barcelona, Spain. He is currently a PhD candidate at Liverpool John Moores University, focusing on nutrition and exercise in cardiac rehabilitation.

Richie has a particular interest in how the food we eat can impact our health and performance. His current research is focused on the augmentation of muscle mass and how this may reduce the risk of cardiometabolic disease. He is working with Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital to look at clinical interventions in cardiac rehabilitation. He is a Research Officer in Active Lifestyles at the Carnegie School of Sport at Leeds Beckett University. Richie has authored a number of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
