Course Description

In this course, Surekha Pendyal, MSc, MEd, RD, FAND, will describe the cellular processes affected by Pompe Disease; describe goals of nutrition therapy in children and adults; recognize the limitations of nutrition therapy; examine research on exercise and nutrition co-therapy; and describe other nutritional concerns in Pompe Disease. Originally presented live at the 19th Abbott Metabolic Conference on 18 May 2023, in San Antonio, TX.

Surekha Pendyal has been practicing as a metabolic dietitian since 1997, when North Carolina began the pilot project to expand newborn screening using tandem mass spectrometry technology. She gained extensive experience in treating a variety of inherited metabolic disorders (IMDs), coordinating newborn screening, conducting educational activities for patients and their families, and publishing a patient newsletter. In 2015, she joined the Division of Medical Genetics at Duke University, where she inherited a large patient population with glycogen storage diseases (GSD), a challenge she was seeking. She has been an active member of Genetic Metabolic Dietitians International since its inception. Surekha has authored a book chapter on IMD, has published many articles on IMD in peer-reviewed journals, and is an invited speaker at professional conferences and the annual family meeting for GSD. She considers the best part of her job to be teaching patients and medical and dietetic students about IMD and establishing lifelong relationships with patients and their families.
