Course Description:

Children with neurologic impairment (NI), including cerebral palsy, often experience complex nutrition challenges that affect growth, gastrointestinal function, hydration, body composition, and overall health. Common complications such as oral motor dysfunction, dysphagia, gastroesophageal reflux, constipation, spasticity, scoliosis, and altered energy expenditure can significantly influence nutritional status and care planning.

An evidence-based approach to nutrition care includes identifying nutrition risk factors, evaluating growth and body composition, and applying appropriate anthropometric assessment methods when standard measurements are difficult to obtain. Considerations for estimating energy, protein, fluid, and micronutrient needs are essential due to the wide variability in medical condition, mobility, and muscle tone among children with NI. 

Practical nutrition strategies for oral and enteral feeding, along with monitoring of growth, feeding tolerance, hydration, nutrient adequacy, and caregiver concerns, can help support individualized care and optimize health outcomes in this population.

Jodi Wolff is a Pediatric Dietitian with 20 years of experience caring for children with complex medical needs such as metabolic disorders, renal, oncology, cystic fibrosis, critical care, and neurological impairment. Jodi is part of a multidisciplinary team caring for children with medical complexity at the Center for Comprehensive Care at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital care in Cleveland, Ohio.

Jodi received a Bachelor of Science degree from Youngstown State University and a Master of Science degree in Nutrition from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio where she is currently an adjunct instructor at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine.

She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nutrition and the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine. She was also appointed to serve as a member of ASPEN’s Malnutrition Committee.

Jodi has authored several book chapters and articles on topics including critical care, GI, malnutrition, and nutrition for children with neurological impairment. She developed the curriculum for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Nutrition Focused Physical Exam Hands-On Workshop and is a national speaker on topics such as Nutrition Focused Physical Exam and Pediatric Malnutrition. She believes that Nutrition Focused Physical Exam is an essential skill for clinicians working with pediatric patients and will allow for earlier identification and treatment of malnutrition, resulting in better outcomes and overall health.
