Course Description

In this course, Lauren Arpe, defines fibre, its characteristics and the different types of fibre in the diet; describes the current recommendations of fibre intake in the diet; and recognises the importance of fibre in gastrointestinal disorders. Originally presented at a UK Abbott study day on 14 June 2023.

Course Objectives
  • Define fibre, its characteristics and the different types of fibres in the diet. 
  • Describe the current recommendations of fibre intake in the diet. 
  • Recognise the importance of fibre in gastrointestinal disorders, including functional gastrointestinal disorders, paediatric intestinal pseudo-obstruction syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and food allergy.

Lauren is the Clinical Dietetic Lead for Mucosal Immunology at Great Ormond Street Hospital and the team leader for the Paediatric Dietetic Gastroenterology team. She looks after children with various gastroenterological conditions and has a special interest in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and Coeliac Disease. Lauren graduated in South Africa in 2005 and has been practising as a Paediatric Dietitian in the NHS since 2009.
