Course Description

In this course, Nancy Munoz, DCN, MHA, RDN, FAND, and Megan Norwood, MBA, MS, RDN, LD, CNSC, will review current evidence-based nutrition care recommendations for the prevention and treatment of Pressure Injuries (PIs); discuss the role and implementation of the newly released Standardized Pressure Injury Prevention Protocol Checklist (SPIPP-Adult) 2.0; describe the process for healthcare professionals to implement nutrition care recommendations into actionable steps and include them as part of a patient plan of care; and more! Originally presented as a live webinar on 23 August 2023.

Course Objectives
  • Review current evidence-based nutrition care recommendations for the prevention and treatment of pressure injuries (PIs). 
  • Discuss the role and implementation of the newly released Standardized Pressure Injury Prevention Protocol Checklist (SPIPP-Adult) 2.0. 
  • Describe the process for healthcare professionals to implement nutrition care recommendations into actionable steps and include them as part of a patient plan of care. 
  • Demonstrate the skills necessary to deliver nutritional supplementation to patients in a timely, safe, and evidence-based manner.

Nancy Munoz, DCN, MHA, RDN, FAND

Dr Munoz is a Supervisory Dietitian, Chief for Nutrition and Food Service for the Southern Nevada VA Healthcare System, where she is responsible for the daily operational activities of the Administrative and Clinical Sections of the healthcare system, providing care to 72,000 Veterans. Prior to this, she was Clinical Nutrition Manager for Genesis Healthcare, where she directed clinical nutrition therapy services to assure high-quality care and compliance with regulatory agencies, including the development, communication, and implementation of clinical nutrition protocols, and supervised over 100 dietitians in skilled nursing and assisted living facilities. Dr Munoz received her Doctorate in Clinical Nutrition from Rutgers University, School of Health-Related Professions, and her Master of General Administration (with a concentration in Health Care) from the University of Maryland. 

Dr Munoz has authored several scientific articles in journals including Adv Skin Wound Care, Nutr Clin Pract, J Clin Nurs, Crit Care Nurs Clin, and J Am Dietetic Assoc, several books and book chapters covering dietary topics, and several posters presented at scientific meetings including the World Union Wound Healing Societies and the Food and Nutrition Conference Expo. She has lectured extensively in numerous forums and has served as an instructor for the University of Massachusetts Amherst Masters in Public Health Program, the University of Phoenix College of Nursing and Healthcare Program, and Rutgers University School of Health-Related Professions. Awards and honors include the Medallion Award from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (recognizing a lifetime of contributions to the nutrition and dietetics profession), a Certificate of Appreciation for the contribution to the development of the Prevention and Treatment of Pressure Injuries Clinical Practice Guideline as a leader of the Nutrition Small Working Group, and the Carolyn Sebastianelli Distinguished Member Award from the New Jersey Dietetic Association. 

Dr Munoz has served on numerous committees, including the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel, WoundSource, Dietetics in Healthcare Communities, the Healthy Aging Dietetics Practice Group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Positions Committee, and several others.

With over 50 Registered Dietitians, Diet Techs, and CDMs, Nutrition Alliance is the largest provider of these services in Skilled Nursing Facilities and Behavioral Health Consulting Services in Arizona. Anna has a wealth of experience in senior living, acute and behavioral care, food safety, and brand management. She is a dynamic speaker and loves presenting on nutrition and wound healing. Anna has presented for several organizations both locally and nationally. She is currently the Treasurer for the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel.

Megan Norwood, MBA, MS, RDN, LD, CNSC

Megan Norwood is the Food and Nutrition Director at Medical City Healthcare. Previously, she was the Clinical Nutrition Director of HealthTrust Supply Chain Solutions. She has a B.S. in Nutrition from the University of Texas at Austin, an M.S. in Nutrition from Texas Woman’s University, and an MBA from the University of Texas at Tyler. She is a Registered Dietitian and a Certified Nutrition Support Clinician.
