Course Description

In this course, Kate A Tauber, MD, MA, and Sharon Groh-Wargo, PhD, RDN, will review the importance of specialized nutrition for the preterm infant to maximize neurodevelopmental outcomes after discharge; describe best practices and challenges for the healthcare team when planning for discharge using either breast milk and/or formula products; and discuss a case study to illustrate nutritional goals for a typical NICU graduate. This program was originally presented as a live webinar on 27 February 2025.

Dr Kate Tauber is a Professor of Pediatrics at Albany Medical Center at the Bernard and Millie Duker Children’s Hospital. Dr Tauber earned her medical degree from Albany Medical College. She completed her Pediatric Residency training at the University of Michigan and her Neonatal-Perinatal fellowship at Albany Medical Center. Dr Tauber’s research interests are in neonatal nutrition, optimizing lactation support for birthing parents of infants in the NICU, and improving education for providers of neonates on lactogenesis and the benefits of breastmilk. She has spoken at numerous regional, national, and international conferences on the topic of human milk. She is the director of the Human Milk Program at Albany Medical Center. She leads a large ongoing quality improvement project to increase the education and awareness of the importance of human milk for preterm infants through educational programs for medical students, residents, nurses, and NICU parents. Additionally, she has implemented an individualized program for parents of NICU infants to support their lactation journey throughout their NICU stay by providing weekly one-on-one counseling with CLC-certified medical students.

Sharon Groh-Wargo, PhD, RDN

Dr Groh-Wargo has over 40 years of experience as a Neonatal Dietitian, is a nationally known speaker and researcher, and has authored numerous publications on neonatal nutrition. She is a contributor to all three editions of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Pocket Guide to Neonatal Nutrition and authored a chapter on “Lactoengineering” for the 3rd edition of “Infant and Pediatric Feedings: Guidelines for Preparation of Human Milk and Formula in Health Care Facilities”. She participates in the BEGIN Project – Breastmilk Ecology: Genesis of Infant Nutrition, sponsored by the NIH in cooperation with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, which was convened to investigate human milk as a unique biological system. Dr Groh-Wargo received the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Medallion Award in recognition of her professional contributions.
