Course Description

In this course, Katherine Bennett, RD, MPH, CLEC, will name two goals of nutrition therapy aimed at optimizing growth and nutritional status in a child with intestinal failure (IF); identify three nutrients of concern in children who receive long-term parenteral nutrition (PN); describe three oral diet and/or enteral nutrition interventions for a child with IF; and more. Originally presented as a live webinar on 26 October 2022.

Course Objectives
  • Name two goals of nutrition therapy aimed at optimizing growth and nutritional status in the child with intestinal failure (IF).
  • Identify three nutrients of concern in children who are on long-term parenteral nutrition (PN). 
  • Describe 3 oral diet and/or enteral nutrition considerations for a child with IF. 
  • Recognize 2 risks of long-term PN and nutritional strategies to decrease these risks. 
  • Discuss 2 strategies for weaning PN.

Katherine Bennett has over 18 years of experience in the field of pediatric nutrition, ranging from working with premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit to now working with children of all ages in the outpatient setting for the CHOC Gastroenterology and Nutrition Division. She completed her undergraduate degree in Nutrition/Dietetics from the University of Tucson in Arizona, her dietetic internship at the University of Virginia, and her master’s degree in public health from UCLA. She excels in providing individualized nutrition care for various conditions, from inflammatory bowel disease to specialized nutrition support for children with special needs. Katherine is the lead dietitian for CHOC Children’s TPN Clinic where she helps care for children with intestinal failure requiring parenteral nutrition support.
