Course Description

In this course, the faculty will review the impact of malnutrition and muscle loss on clinical outcomes in patients with cancer; summarize body composition techniques for muscle mass assessment and implications for clinical practice; and identify new clinical data on protein and hydroxymethylbutyrate (HMB) as interventions for patients with cancer. Originally presented on 05 September 2022, at the ESPEN Congress in Vienna, Austria.

Dr Muscaritoli is a Professor of Internal Medicine and the Director of the Internal Medicine and Clinical Nutrition Unit at the “Policlinico Umberto I” University Hospital of the Sapienza University in Rome. Dr Muscaritoli’s research mainly focuses on clinical nutrition in chronic diseases and the study of the metabolic changes occurring in chronic diseases, with a particular focus on cancer and the mechanisms of cancer cachexia and the loss of muscle mass and function in experimental models of cancer cachexia in cancer patients. Dr Muscaritoli is the author of more than 250 national and international publications including peer-reviewed articles, papers, ESPEN clinical guidelines, including the latest ESPEN Practical Guideline: Clinical Nutrition in Cancer.

Paula Ravasco, MD, RD, MSc, PhD

Dr Ravasco has a degree in Nutritional Sciences, Nutrition, and Food Engineering, as well as her Master's and PhD at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon. She is a Professor of Clinical Nutrition and Clinical Research at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon, a Coordination Board member of the Master’s in Clinical Nutrition, and a Principal Investigator at the Unit of Nutrition and Metabolism of the Institute of Molecular Medicine, her area of special interest is oncology. 

She is the recipient of 4 research grants and 7 national or international prizes in clinical research. She has been involved in various scientific activities since May 2001. She is also an active member of several professional societies in nutrition and oncology including ESPEN where she served as an author of the 2016 ESPEN practical guideline: Clinical Nutrition in Cancer. She has been a reviewer for 17 scientific journals in nutrition/medicine/oncology since 2003.

Carla Prado, PhD, RD

Dr Carla Prado is an Associate Professor at the University of Alberta and a Registered Dietitian. She holds a Campus Alberta Innovates Chair in Nutrition, Food and Health and is the Director of the Human Nutrition Research Unit, a state-of-the-art research and training facility. Dr Prado was recently recognized as one of the most influential young Canadian leaders, receiving Canada’s Top 40 Under 40 Award.

Carla is an expert in body composition assessment. Her research program focuses on the identification and treatment of abnormalities in body composition (especially low muscle mass), with a special interest in cancer. The focus of her current research program is to develop targeted nutrition interventions for the prevention and treatment of low muscle mass in cancer. She shares her expertise as an Associate Editor of Clinical Nutrition and the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle.

Dr Prado received her PhD from the University of Alberta, Canada, and has completed further training at the Cross Cancer Institute (Canada), the National Institutes of Health (USA), and Newcastle University (UK).
