Course Description

In this course, John T Stutts, MD, MPH, and Jorge Chávez Sáenz, MD, will define functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) and disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBIs); examine the prevalence of DGBIs globally; discuss the health and economic consequences of DGBIs; and more. This program was originally presented live at WCPGHAN on 6 December 2024. 

Course Objectives
  • Define functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) and disorders of the gut-brain interaction (DGBIs).
  • Examine the prevalence of DGBIs globally.
  • Discuss the health and economic consequences of DGBIs.
  • Review the etiology of DGBIs and the most frequent DGBIs in infants and toddlers.
  • Discuss the role of nutrition in the management of DGBIs.

John Stutts, MD, MPH, is the Medical Director of Pediatric Nutrition at Abbott. He has participated in numerous clinical trials in his tenure, including many studies with the Norton Children’s Pediatric Clinical Research Unit. He is a past member of the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Professional Education, Public Education, and Professional Development Committees. Dr Stutts earned his Bachelor of Science from Purdue University and his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Louisville. He completed his Pediatric Residency, Pediatric Gastroenterology Fellowship, and Master of Public Health from Vanderbilt University.

Jorge Chávez Sáenz, MD

Jorge Chávez Sáenz, MD, is a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Anáhuac Norte, with a degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). He studied at the Federico Gómez Children's Hospital of Mexico, National Institute of Health, the Specialty of Medical Pediatrics, the subspecialty of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition and the High Specialty Course in Diagnostic Endoscopy and Therapy in Pediatrics. Later, he completed a Master's Degree in Human Nutrition at the University of Guadalajara. 

He is certified by the Mexican Council of Pediatrics and by the Mexican Council of Gastroenterology. He has collaborated with various institutions such as: San Carlos Hospital in Altamirano Chiapas, the National Center for Child and Adolescent Health of the Ministry of Health, ABC Hospital Santa Fe Campus and Pachuca Children's Hospital, General Hospital of the West, among others.

Jorge Chávez Sáenz, MD, is a member of the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, where he participated in the resident committee and the international committee. He is also a member of the Latin American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. He has belonged to the College of Pediatrics of Jalisco, the Society of Physicians of the Children's Hospital of Mexico, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, among others.
