Infant Feeding: Best Practices for Healthcare Providers

Course Description

This course is supported by an educational grant from ANHI. The first 1,000 healthcare professionals can enroll for free. Once all free enrollments have been used, there will be a $20 registration fee.

In this course, developed by The Ohio State University, Suzanne L. Smith, MS, RD, LDN, IBCLC, will discuss the basics of tracking healthy infant growth and development; discuss the importance of human milk, safe handling/storage guidelines, and the clinical implications of unsafe handling/storage; discuss different types of infant formulas, safe handling/storage guidelines, and methods to help prevent contamination of infant feedings; and more.

Course Objectives
  • Discuss the basics of tracking healthy infant growth and development.
  • Discuss the importance of human milk, safe handling/storage guidelines, and the clinical implications of unsafe handling/storage.
  • Discuss different types of infant formulas, safe handling/storage guidelines, and methods to help prevent contamination of infant feedings.
  • Describe clinical implications of using homemade formula and over-diluting infant formula.
  • Describe steps used in an institution and at home for formula and human milk preparation.
  • Discuss techniques for transitioning infants from human milk/infant formula to solid baby foods and identify when an infant is developmentally ready to transition.

Suzanne Smith, MS, RD, LDN, IBCLC, is an experienced neonatal dietitian who has made significant contributions to the field of neonatal nutrition throughout her career. In her clinical roles in Cincinnati and Charlotte, Suzanne's evidence-based approach to neonatal care led to improved clinical outcomes and helped establish standards of care for neonatal nutrition. 

Suzanne has extensive experience in the design, construction, and staffing of infant feeding preparation rooms. Her expertise in this area has helped multiple facilities ensure regulatory compliance, implement best practices, improve parent satisfaction, and ensure the accurate and precise delivery of nutrition to their patients.

Currently, Suzanne is using her clinical experience to help hospitals implement innovative technologies from Timeless Medical Systems. She works closely with hospital staff to ensure the seamless integration of these technologies and is passionate about improving quality assurance, efficiency, and patient outcomes.
