In this article, Michelle Doran, RN, DNP, NPD-BC, will identify the 4 main principles of ethics; describe 3 common ethical dilemmas in the NICU; and discuss 2 strategies to effectively manage ethical challenges in the NICU.

Michelle Doran, RN, DNP, NPD-BC, is a professional development specialist at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr Doran has decades of experience in clinical and professional development for nurses and interprofessional team members in healthcare settings. Her background includes various administrative leadership roles in academic medical centers, pediatric rehabilitation, and the health plan industry. She is the former Director of Healthcare for Corporate Counseling Associates, a national Employee Assistance Program company. As such, she helped develop programs and services to support the emotional health and well-being of nurses and healthcare providers, including leaders. She is currently a member of their nurse advisory board. Michelle is also a writer and editor and has been published in several peer-reviewed journals. She received her bachelor's degree in business administration from James Madison University, her Bachelor of Science in nursing from The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, her master's degree in nursing administration from Regis College, and her doctorate in nursing practice from The George Washington University School of Nursing.
