In this article, Gina O'Toole, MPH, RD, CLEC, CSPCC, and Katherine Bennett, RD, MPH, CLEC, define the goals of nutrition therapy for intestinal rehabilitation of the infant with short bowel syndrome (SBS)/intestinal failure (IF); identify nutrients of concern in infants who are dependent on parenteral nutrition; describe benefits of fish-oil containing intravenous fat emulsions; and list the benefits of maternal milk for the infant with SBS/IF.

Gina O’Toole is a Neonatal Dietitian at CHOC Children’s Hospital in Orange, CA. She has played an integral role in the development of the Surgical NICU at CHOC, participated in institutional research, and developed nutrition and feeding guidelines for surgical neonates diagnosed with short bowel syndrome/IF. Gina has participated in multiple quality improvement initiatives through the Vermont Oxford Network, the Children’s Hospital Neonatal Consortium, and the California Perinatal Quality Care Collaborative. Additionally, she has authored the chapter “Short Bowel Syndrome and Intestinal Failure” in the 3rd edition of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Pocket Guide to Neonatal Nutrition. Gina is an invited speaker on both the local and national stages with a nutritional emphasis on prematurity, surgical infants, and short bowel syndrome.

Katherine Bennett has over 18 years of experience in the field of pediatric nutrition, ranging from working with premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit to now working with children of all ages in the outpatient setting for the CHOC Gastroenterology and Nutrition Division. She completed her undergraduate degree in Nutrition/Dietetics from the University of Tucson in Arizona, her dietetic internship at the University of Virginia, and her master’s degree in public health from UCLA. She excels in providing individualized nutrition care for a varied range of conditions from inflammatory bowel disease to specialized nutrition support for children with special needs. Katherine is the lead dietitian for CHOC Children’s TPN Clinic where she helps care for children with intestinal failure requiring parenteral nutrition support.
