Refaat joined Abbott in 2009 as adult nutrition medical director, Abbott Nutrition (AN). He has held several positions at Abbott, including regional medical director of US & Canada at ADC, director of global medical affairs & external engagement at AN. Refaat assumed his current role as DVP, global medical affairs, clinical development & HEOR based in Columbus, OH, in 2022. 

Prior to joining Abbott, he was Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School, Pittsburgh, PA; before which he was Assistant Professor of Preventive Medicine at Mansoura University, Mansoura, Egypt. 

Refaat attended Mansoura University Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura, Egypt and received MBBCh degree in 1989 and MS in Occupational Health in 1995. He then attended Graduate School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh and received MPH degree in 1998 and PhD in 2002. He attended Franklin University and received his MBA in 2017. Refaat is certified by the American Board of Physician Nutrition Specialists in 2001. He pioneered global nutrition projects (e.g., Transcultural Diabetes Nutrition Algorithm, FeedMe) and led clinical studies that were cited by clinical nutrition practice guidelines. Refaat authored 80 peer reviewed publications, 7 book chapters and 2 patents.
