A conversation with Anice Sabag-Daigle, PhD, Research Scientist, Abbott Nutrition:

Q: Tell us about yourself.

Hi, I’m Dr Anice Sabag-Daigle. I’m a research scientist at Abbott Nutrition who studies the gut microbiome and how it influences health. Early on in my career, I focused on harmful bacteria, like Salmonella, to understand how they survived and caused infection in the human gut. Over time, that work naturally evolved into a bigger interest in the whole gut microbiome and how we can use nutrition to support it. Now at Abbott, I work on translating that science into practical nutrition solutions- basically figuring out how things like fibers and other ingredients can positively shape the microbiome to support gut and overall health in both kids and adults.

Q: What would you most like healthcare professionals to know about the gut microbiome?

Here are the three things that stand out most for me:

  • The gut microbiome is deeply connected to overall health. What’s happening in the gut isn’t isolated to the gut, it can influence digestion, immunity, metabolism, and even things beyond our gut like our heart, brain and liver.
  • Nutrition is one of the most practical ways to influence the gut microbiome. The old saying is true, “We are what we eat”. Things like fibers and prebiotics can shape the microbiome in positive ways. That makes nutrition a powerful tool to support our gut health.
  • The goal is to translate this science into real-world solutions. My focus now is taking what we learn in research and turning it into something impactful, whether that’s a product, an ingredient, or new way to study the gut microbiome that can make a difference for our consumers.

Q: Where can we find more information that supports your work?

I've worked with ANHI to develop these self-study courses; I hope you'll find them helpful:

Expert Bio(s):

Anice Sabag-Daigle, PhD

Research Scientist
Abbott Nutrition
Columbus, OH, USA

Dr Anice Sabag-Daigle's scientific career journey is marked by a series of significant achievements and contributions. Her career began with a strong academic foundation, earning an undergraduate degree in microbiology from Ohio Wesleyan University and a PhD in microbiology from The Ohio State University. Her passion for scientific research began during her undergraduate degree with an independent undergraduate research project. During her time at The Ohio State University, Anice made groundbreaking discoveries, including the identification of the novel fructose-asparagine metabolic pathway in Salmonella. Her research characterized the regulation of this unique pathway and its role in Salmonella pathophysiology. As a highly collaborative researcher, she worked with prominent research labs to further understand Salmonella infection dynamics in the host using multi-omics technologies. Her academic work has resulted in over 25 peer-reviewed publications.

In 2022, Anice joined Abbott Nutrition as a Research Scientist, where she quickly established herself as a key player in the Gut and Immunity Global Innovation Platform tasked with driving early R&D work. Her work focuses on the complex relationship between diet and the gut microbiota, aiming to develop translatable, innovative nutritional solutions for Abbott’s broad consumer base. Anice's expertise in microbial metabolism, pathogenesis, and host-microbiome interactions has been instrumental in advancing critical projects with microbiome-driven benefits in both pediatric and adult nutrition for Abbott.
