Obesity and Critical Care Nutrition

Publication Date: 23 March 2023

Patients admitted to the intensive care unit increasingly present as overweight and with obesity. Malnutrition may be underrecognized and underdiagnosed in these patients due to underlying comorbidities, immunological factors, changes in energy expenditure, and other aspects of metabolism. This video summary reviews current guidelines for malnutrition screening and assessment in patients with obesity and provides recommendations for determining energy and protein needs. Current practice gaps and directions for future research are also outlined. The original article, "Obesity and critical care nutrition: current practice gaps and directions for future research," was published in Critical Care in September 2022.
