Course Description

In this course, Annalynn Skipper, PhD, RDN, FADA, CNSC, and Anne Coltman, MS, RD, LDN, CNSC, will review the background and evolution of validated malnutrition screening tools for adults; summarize new evidence on validated malnutrition screening tools by health care setting; and discuss the use of validated malnutrition screening tools through real-world examples and clinical practice.

Annalynn Skipper, PhD came to the AMA from a nutrition and healthcare consulting firm in Oak Park, IL. As a consultant, she assisted two professional organizations in developing and publishing education program standards. She served for five years as editor of the Nutrition Care Manual, an online reference used in more than 4,000 hospitals in the US and abroad. Prior to her consulting role, Dr. Skipper directed the Nutrition Consultation Service at Rush University Medical Center where she was also an associate professor and directed the Combined Master of Science/Supervised Practice program in Clinical Nutrition. Before moving to Chicago, Dr. Skipper was a member of the Nutrition Support Service at the Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia where she provided nutrition care to ICU patients receiving enteral and parenteral nutrition. Dr. Skipper is internationally recognized for her work in developing a standardized language for dietetics and nutrition practice. For the past decade she has been involved in efforts to analyze and disseminate evidence supporting a standardized approach to nutrition screening, and she contributes to an interdisciplinary effort to develop valid criteria for diagnosing malnutrition.

Anne Coltman, MS, RD, LDN, CNSC

Anne Coltman is the Clinical Nutrition Coordinator at Loyola University Medical Center, as well as on the graduate faculty for the Dietetic Internship and Master of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics programs within the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing at Loyola University Chicago. She received her BS in Dietetics at the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign and her MS in Clinical Nutrition, and her dietetic internship at Rush University in Chicago, IL. Anne has previous experience as a nutrition support dietitian in surgical critical care, as well as a faculty member, specializing in nutrition assessment, physical exam, and micronutrient deficiencies in gastrointestinal, surgical, and critical care nutrition. Within the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Anne has held numerous leadership roles, including currently serving as the Young Practitioner for the Council on Future Practice, a member of the Quality Leader Alliance, an editor of the Nutrition Care Manual sections on gastrointestinal disorders and bariatric surgery, and previously served as a member on the Evidence Analysis Library Adult Nutrition Screening Workgroup. She serves as an ad hoc reviewer for both the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as well as the Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. She previously held several leadership positions within the Chicago Area Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, including president, membership chair, publication chair, and program chair.

Ainsley M Malone, MS, RD, LD, CNSC, FAND, FASPEN

Ms Malone serves as a Clinical Practice Specialist for the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) where she works to support clinical practice activities for the organization. She retired in 2023 from her 40-year career as a nutrition support dietitian within the Mt. Carmel Health System in Columbus where she assisted in the management of patients requiring enteral and parenteral nutrition.

Ainsley is a global and national leader in malnutrition related activities having served as an author of the 2012 Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics/ASPEN Malnutrition Consensus Characteristics and the 2018 Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) consensus characteristics. She is currently serving as Co-Lead of the GLIM Implementation and Dissemination working group. Over her longstanding career, Ainsley has served in many nutrition leadership capacities including President of ASPEN 2013-14 and on the Board of Directors for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics where she currently serves as Speaker of the House of Delegates.
