Summary

In this free, live, accredited webinar, Rakhi Gupta Basuray, MD, FAAP, and Sharon Groh-Wargo, PhD, RDN, will analyze current scientific evidence and physiological rationale underlying routine newborn care interventions such as hepatitis B immunization, Vitamin K and ophthalmic erythromycin prophylaxis, car seat tolerance screening, tongue-tie management, and newborn toxicology testing. Apply evidence-based recommendations and shared decision-making strategies when delivering newborn care for these interventions. Evaluate current research on maternal micronutrients (i.e., fluoride, iodine), exposure, and infant feeding practices. Assess the safety, regulatory considerations, and available evidence related to non-traditional human milk practices, including freeze-dried human milk and informal milk sharing. Discuss the evidence and guidelines for the feeding of infants born to persons living with or at risk for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

Mary Kaminski, DNP, APRN, NNP-BC, is the Manager for Nursing Health Care Education for Abbott Nutrition Health Institute (ANHI) and a retired Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP). Dr Kaminski received her MS in perinatal nursing from the University of Illinois at Chicago and her doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) from The Ohio State University. She has been working in neonatal nursing for over 40 years. She has worked as a clinical nurse specialist, program manager, and clinical nurse educator. Mary developed the NNP certificate program at the Columbus Children’s Hospital and went on to teach at The Ohio State University for over 12 years in their NNP Program. She has helped over 250 students become NNP’s over her career. Mary has been an active volunteer on the national and local levels for the National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NANN) and the National Association of Neonatal Nurse Practitioners.  She is an accomplished author, having contributed to peer-reviewed journals and textbook chapters. Her interests include NNP education and professional development, Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension (PPHN), and the surgical neonate.

Rakhi Gupta Basuray, MD, is a physician in the Division of Hospital Pediatrics at Nationwide Children’s in Columbus, Ohio. Her career has focused on Hospital Medicine and Medical Education. Dr Gupta Basuray graduated from The Ohio State University College of Medicine, completed her pediatric internship at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital, and residency at Loyola Medicine Children’s Hospital in the Chicago area.

Prior to relocating to Columbus, Ohio, Dr Gupta Basuray was a pediatric hospitalist with the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital. While there, she served as Director of the Quality Improvement Curriculum for the residency program and gained experience as Director of the In-Patient Child Protection Team. Since she transitioned to Nationwide Children’s, she has focused her clinical time within Newborn Medicine. Currently, she serves as co-chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Neonatal Hospitalist Subcommittee, within the Section on Hospital Medicine. She has come full circle, returning to The Ohio State University College of Medicine, holding positions within Undergraduate Medical Education as Director of the Knowledge for Practice Competency and Associate Academic Program Director for the third-year students’ clerkship year.

Dr Gupta Basuray has presented at AAP conferences, including National Convention & Exhibits, Pediatric Academic Societies annual meeting, and Pediatric Hospital Medicine. She has published in AAP's journal, Hospital Pediatrics, on the MedEdPortal platform, a book chapter on Interprofessional Communication, amongst other work.

Sharon Groh-Wargo, PhD, RDN

Dr Groh-Wargo has over 40 years of experience as a Neonatal Dietitian, is a nationally known speaker and researcher, and has authored numerous publications on neonatal nutrition. She is a contributor to all three editions of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Pocket Guide to Neonatal Nutrition and authored a chapter on “Lactoengineering” for the 3rd edition of “Infant and Pediatric Feedings: Guidelines for Preparation of Human Milk and Formula in Health Care Facilities.” She participates in the BEGIN Project – Breastmilk Ecology: Genesis of Infant Nutrition, sponsored by the NIH in cooperation with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, which was convened to investigate human milk as a unique biological system. Dr Groh-Wargo received the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ Medallion Award in recognition of her professional contributions.
