Dr Goates describes a health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) analysis of estimated lifetime data from the multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial of oral nutritional supplementation with high protein and β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate (HP-HMB) in malnourished, cardiopulmonary patients aged 65 years or older (The NOURISH Study*). Careful modeling of healthcare costs and benefits indicates that the HP-HMB intervention 1) increased projected life expectancy by 8.5 months, 2) had a Number Needed to Treat (NNT) of 20.3 to prevent one death, and 3) had a 10x lower Cost per Quality Adjusted Life Year (QALY) than aspirin.
