The Importance of Early Recognition of Cow’s Milk Allergy

Cow’s milk allergy is the most common food allergy in children in most developed countries within the first few years of life, presenting as both IgE and non-IgE mediated allergy. Dr Fleischer describes the need for early identification of CMA, and the consequences of delayed diagnosis and inappropriate dietary management on growth and development. He provides simple and practical guidance on how to identify CMA.

The Management of Cow’s Milk Allergy

Dr Venter’s talk focuses on the clinical and dietary management of mild to moderate non-IgE mediated cow’s milk allergy. She reviews the recently published iMAP Guidelines (International Milk Allergy in Primary Care) to assist clinicians in clinical care pathways for strict exclusion of cow’s milk protein; breastfeeding, formula feeding, or mixed feeding; reintroduction of cow’s milk protein; and the use of the Milk Ladder to test for acquired tolerance of cow’s milk.
