Diabetes is more common than many realize. According to the International Diabetes Federation, approximately 11.1% of adults aged 20 to 79 worldwide—that’s about 1 in 9 people—are living with diabetes. Even more concerning, over 40% of them don’t even know they have it. That’s why we’re here: to provide trusted educational resources that support informed decisions, better outcomes, and healthier lives.

Dietary Intake by Patients Taking GLP-1 and Dual GIP/GLP-1 Receptor Agonists: A Narrative Review and Discussion of Research Needs

Glucagon-like peptide receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) and dual mechanism glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide/glucagon-like peptide receptor agonists (GIP/GLP-1RAs) are effective treatments for weight loss and diabetes management. They reduce appetite and caloric intake by 16–39%. However, studies provide limited data on their impact on diet composition, eating patterns, and macronutrient or micronutrient intake. This video explores key findings from a narrative review, highlighting what we know—and don’t know—about dietary changes during GLP-1 therapy. It also uncovers critical gaps in research and discusses why understanding these changes is essential for improving patient outcomes.

Dietary Intake by Patients Taking GLP-1 and Dual GIP/GLP-1 Receptor Agonists

Due to the high efficacy of glucagon-like peptide receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) and dual mechanism glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide/glucagon-like peptide receptor agonists (GIP/GLP-1RAs) for weight reduction and glycemic control, there is increased utilization for patients with obesity and/or T2DM. Yet, the impact of these medications on dietary intake is less understood. This narrative literature review summarizes clinical studies quantifying and characterizing dietary intake in people with obesity and/or T2DM using GLP-1 or GIP/GLP-1 RA.
